Key Features to consider for cell phone charging valet organizers
These features are equally important to ensure you have a functional way to charge all your devices that you won’t mind looking at every day.
- Style
- Number of charging ports and slots
- Maximum output and output per port
- Overcharging protection
Now, let’s take a closer look at these features.
Style
I am talking about more than just looks here. There are 2 main categories I will separate charging valets into. All-in-one models with built in power supplies and 2-piece organizers that require you to purchase a separate multi-port USB Charger. Here are a few things to think about with each of these.
All-in-one chargers
All-in-one chargers are usually simpler in design and more modern looking. Most of these have a row of “slots” to place your devices into while charging. Almost all these models are made from plastic. Some of these models also include wireless charging.
Separate chargers
With this style you will find many more options. The first option is the material they are made from. Wood and leather covered are two of the most common materials. Many of them will also include drawers and bins to store other items along with your electronics. If you have an Apple Watch there are several models that are made to hold the Apple Watch charger too.
One thing to watch out for with this type of charging valet is the size of the compartment that holds the power supply, many of them are too small meaning the power supply will be left exposed next to or beside the organizer. This doesn’t help with the goal of cleaning up the clutter.
One last style consideration is stability. Some designs look nice, but are top heavy and can flip over, especially when holding a large tablet.
Number of charging ports and slots
How many devices do you need to charge and what are they? do you have an apple watch or other smart watch that you need to charge along with your phone and tablet?
Most organizers can hold between 2 and 6 devices. It’s important to leave room for expansion. I knew I would likely be charging as many as 4 devices at a time, so I added a little cushion and got a 6-slot charging station. I have had all 6 slots in use more often than I thought I would.
I have a variety of cables connected to my charger, USB C, Micro USB and Lightning. This makes it a great place to plug in other things like my camera battery charger because the charging valet is always in the same place and I know the cables are there and ready to go.
Maximum output and output per port
Almost all new smartphones and tablets support fast charging. To take advantage of this you need to select a charging station that has enough power.
Some chargers are rated at less than 0.5 amps, while new devices with “Quick Charge 3.0” can draw over 4 amps on a single port. If you want the fastest possible charge make sure you pick one with “Quick Charge 3.0”.
More amps means faster charging (if your device supports it). One thing to consider when selecting a USB charger is how many “fast charge” ports can be used at the same time. A charger that is rated at 10 watts, or more, per port would be ideal. This will allow you to charge at 2 amps per port (standard fast charging).
Overcharging Protection
The last thing you want a charger to do is destroy your phone or tablet. With phones costing over $1,000 spending a little extra to get a quality charger is well worth it. There are several ways your charger should protect the device it’s charging.
- Overcharging Protection – Once your device is fully charged the charger should turn off to prevent overcharging and damaging the device battery.
- Over Current Protection – This prevents the charger from allowing too much power to flow damaging your devices battery.
- Overheating Protection – A charger should also monitor the temperature and turn down or off if it is getting too hot.
- Short Circuit Protection – This is similar to over current protection and prevents too much power from flowing if there is a short circuit in the charger, device or cable.
Recommended Chargers
Now that you understand what features to look for, here are a few of my favorite charging valets.
Hercules Tuff Charging Station
I am using this one right now to charge my devices. The Hercules has a clean simple design that holds up to 6 devices. It features a plastic base with built in charging ports. The base is a metallic gray with clear plastic dividers. Each divider has a blue light that lets you know the device is charging. Once the device is fully charged the light on that divider turns off. If you use the charging station in your bedroom like I do, you might not want the light on at night. You can turn the LEDs off with a switch on the back of the base.
The spacing between charging slots is large enough to fit most phones. My daughter’s Galaxy S7 fits even with an Otter Box case and a Pop Socket.
This model is able to output up to 2.4 amps on every port for fast charging. It also has circuit protection to prevent damage to your electronics. It doesn’t have “Fast Charrge 3.0”, but it has a lot of great reviews making it a smart choice if you’re looking for a reliable charger
Another nice feature of this charger is that it includes 6 short charging cables. There are 2 versions of this charger on Amazon with different cable configurations. There is a choose-your-own-cable option or an option that includes 2x micro USB, 2x USB C and 2x Apple Lightning.

Separate Cell Phone Organizer and USB Charger Recommendation
I’ll start with my favorite USB Charger. The Aukey 6-Port USB-C Charging Station with Quick Charge 3.0 is great USB charger to pair with a device organizer.
It has 4 ports capable of outputting up to 2.4 amps and 2 ports that support Quick Charge 3.0 for the fastest possible charging with USB C. All the ports on this charger are protected to keep your devices safe.

MobileVision Bamboo Modular Cell Phone Valet
This option is available in a light bamboo finish or a darker wood. It can hold several devices including 3 cell phones in the front section and 2 larger tablets or thin laptops in the back slots.
You can also add an Apple Watch charger or Airpod charger to the sides (1 on each side).
I like the slim version of this organizer. It is still large enough to hold the USB charger, but looks sleeker on your desk or counter. If you want a drawer to store other items there is a version that includes a drawer base that sits below the organizer

Prosumer’s Choice Charging Rack
This cell phone charging rack is simpler in design, the only options are a natural bamboo or black finish.
This rack can hold up to 6 devices along with your USB charger. The lower compartment on this charging station is larger than most and can hold a standard power strip. If you like the idea of using the charger that came with your device, but want to keep everything neat and clean this would be a great choice for you.
All your devices are held horizontally between the supports, each slot is the same side. That means you could charge 6 cell phones, 6 tablets or any combination.

Charging Cables
While most charging stations come with a variety of USB cables, some do not. You shouldn’t need a cable longer than 1’ for any of the stations above. Here are links to a few 1ft cables with the most common connectors
Wrap-Up
As long as you can check the boxes on the key features I mentioned in this article, any cell phone charging valet you pick will help you clean up the clutter and give you a convenient place to charge you devices. As I mentioned the Hercules Charging station is the what I use, it has a clean modern look and doesn’t take up too much space. If you still haven’t made a decision, I would give it a try.
